GARDEN GROVE — Jodey Sok scored the go-ahead touchdown with 48 seconds left to help give Ocean View’s football team a 20-13 win over Los Amigos at Bolsa Grande High on Thursday night.
The junior transfer from Long Beach Jordan played an important role in the second half for the Seahawks (5-1, 1-0) as they won their Sigma League opener. Sok scored from 4 yards out after a great heads up scramble by QB Dean Northam on the previous play.
Ocean View coach Daniel Hernandez had nothing but positive things to say about Sok.
“So he sat out the first five games of the season (as a transfer). Today was his first game playing for us,” Hernandez said. “He’s worked really, really hard. He’s been our scout back for five weeks. Can’t say enough good things about him. He’s a great student. He’s in our engineering club and Robotics club. He’s a 3.8 GPA kid. He’s just a pleasure to be around.”
“Jodey was that spark,” Hernandez added, “and I told Jodey at halftime, be ready and he’s like ‘Coach, I’m going to score if I get the ball.’ And I enjoy that quiet confidence about our players.”
Hernandez also praised his sophomore quarterback, Northam, who helped set up the go-ahead score.
“He’s as tough as nails, and right there, he grew up in that moment,” Hernandez said. “Dean’s just got a lot of moxie.”
Los Amigos (3-3, 0-1) was without starting QB Mytrell Smith and ended up playing four quarterbacks in the game.
“I never played four kids at the quarterback position in one game, you know what I mean?,” Lobos coach Melo Guess said. “I had to do that in one game and still look at the scoreboard with an opportunity to win.”
Amari’e Maddox gave a supreme effort to help Los Amigos tie the game in the fourth quarter. He had a pair of explosive runs, a 57-yarder with 34 seconds left in the third and a 40-yard score with 10:40 remaining.
Maddox was injured late in the fourth quarter after the Lobos defense made a stand in the red zone to stop Northam for no gain on fourth-and-1 from the 10.
Los Amigos was looking to complete its comeback before Maddox exited the game, but Guess was proud of the effort and grit his team showed.
“Kudos to my boys, ’cause they fought hard but tonight,” Guess said. “Man, the odds were stacked against us in that regard.”
The Seahawks opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 67-yard pass from Northam to Zack Zentgraf.
They got another big play early and went up 13-0 in the third quarter on a 70-yard score on a short pass from Northam to Christopher Vincent.
“I’m happy where we’re at,” Hernandez said, “but I keep telling the kids our biggest moment has yet to come.”
